Description
Many Native American tribes honored the spirit of the Bear as a magical being, the shaman of the animal world. The Bear is considered a totem for healing, protection and good fortune.
Of all forms of pottery designing, horsehair may be the most unique. It combines not only the skill of the artist but also the unpredictable forces of nature. The artist starts with a molded ceramic pot, vase or animal shape. He then determines the beauty of the finished piece by permanently penetrating the pot with carbon from the burning horsehair.
The horsehair is applied by hand. As the fire consumes the hair it twists and turns, each piece becoming an original never to be duplicated again.
Because each of these replicas are hand-fashioned by Navaho artist, there are minor variations in material, coloring and decoration making each one a unique piece.
